Lent is the season of preparation for Easter, the Christian Holy Days that celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Ash Wednesday is the official beginning of Lent.
Jesus fasted to bring himself closer to God. Christians do the same, believing that when a person gives up something dear to them, it makes it easier for them to think of God. Fasting does not mean you stop eating everything. For Lent, some people give up different foods, sweets, or other meats.
